Northwestern Garter Snake

Thamnophis ordinoides

hiding in Horsetail Rush (Equisetum sp.)

Kelso, Washington, 1998

This image was taken after a torrential rainstorm. The ground was flooded, and this poor fellow climbed up into the horsetail to dry out, about 2 feet off the ground.

Despite my close approach, he remained perfectly still, no doubt hoping to avoid another swim.
