Padong Hill Tribe Grandmother

Nai Soi Refugee Village, Near Mae Hong Son

Northern Thailand, 2002

The Padong (longneck tribe) are a part of the Karen Hill Tribe people, who fled Burma to avoid persecution and murder from the military dictatorship there. The brass rings are called "moodee", and are worn by young girls and women starting at a young age. each year, rings are added until they get married.

This elder woman graciously agreed to pose for a portrait. In appreciation I made prints of all the people I photographed and mailed them back to the village.
