Hilo
is known as the "rainiest city in the USA". Some areas in
East Hawaii recieve over 400 inches of rain each year!
The
enormous volcanoes, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, prevent the clouds from
passing over the island. The clouds build up and release their moisture.
Meawhile, the leeward (Kona) side of the island is often dry and desert-like,
with over 300 days of sunshine.
