Chaenactis and Bee-plant blooming on volcanic ash hills,

Painted Hills Unit, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Oregon, 1997

The Painted Hills are located in a remote area of Central Oregon. Off the beaten track a bit, but well worth the side trip. I took this image at sunrise to get the saturated colors. The surrounding landscape is surreal: smooth rounded hills of earth-tone layered colors.
