New ice forming on the Eagle River,

north of Anchorage, Alaska

December, 1996

Despite temperatures of -25° F, moving water freezes slowly.

It took several days for the surface of this creek to freeze completely across.

Delicate hoarfrost covers the topside of this ice.

A storm approaches in the distance.
