Hawaiian Monk Seals,

(mother & newborn pup)

Monachus schauinslandi

Hawaii, 2006

In July of 2006, a female monk seal gave birth to a pup on a beach near my home. This species is critically endangered, and under federal protection. I observed them at a distance, so as not to disturb them. The young pup was vocalizing. Shortly thereafter, the mother rolled onto her side and the pup began to nurse.
