With intricate banding, and elegant, elongate fins, juvenile Batavia Spadefish are a favorite for underwater photographers. They take cover near seagrass, coral, or feather stars to be inconspicuous. As they mature and grow larger, the body enlarges, the fins become much smaller, and the banding disappears, until the adult looks nothing like the juvenile.
