Title: "Closing Time"

(Magnificent Anemone, Heteractis Magnifica, with Pink Clownfish)

Palau, Micronesia, 2001

TOTAL EDITION: 500

SIZE: 11.5" X 16.5" (29 cm X 42 cm)

This anemone resembles a large, shaggy area rug when opened up. Periodically, it closes up to digest the "food" it has captured on it's sticky, stinging tentacles. When this happens, the resident anemonefish (aka clownfish) who use the anemone for protection are temporarily displaced and vulnerable. The fish are rendered immune to the stings by secreting a mucous that resembles the scent of the anemone.
