Giant Pacific Manta Ray & diver interaction (MR)

Isla Revillagigedos, Mexico, 2001

Our good friend Steve Banks is seen here giving a good massage to one of the giant mantas which frequent these waters November thru May each year. The mantas here seek out the divers who act as cleaners, gently stroking the belly region of these huge fish. The divers are given instructions on the proper method of contact and there is a strict no-gloves policy to prevent excessive touching. The mantas skin is covered with placoid scales which are rough as coarse sandpaper. Too much contact results in raw fingertips!
