Scuba diver above shoals of Graceful Cardinalfish

(aka sweepers), Majuro Lagoon, Marshall Islands, 2002

We found millions of these cardinalfish shoaling in the hard coral of a reef located in the middle of Majuro lagoon. Grouper and snapper would hover over the shoal hoping for an easy snack, but these savvy fish would simply retreat into the crevices as the predator came within striking distance. The tiny fish covered the coral like a floating carpet, giving the illusion of being part of the coral reef.
