Hiker at the summit of Mauna Loa Volcano, Big Island of Hawaii, 2001 (MR)

Elevation: 13,677 ft. Head is pounding, dizzy, weak, exhilarated. The caldera below us is HUGE, a straight drop of 600 feet. The landscape up here is surreal. But we still have to get back down, so 30 minutes rest and its time to leave. Notice the USGS benchmark in the lower right corner.
