Hiker at terminal moraine of the Fox Glacier, South Island of New Zealand, 2000

A hiker (lower right) contemplates the ancient history of the mass of blue ice in front of her. Walking on something so old gives one a new perspective on life.

As the glacier melts, a superfine powder of rock is released with the water flowing out from beneath the glacier. Milky white in color, this "rock flour" is fine enough to remain in suspension in the water as it flows downstream.
